The term data protection refers to the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons, in particular with regard to their right to the protection of personal data (Article 1 (2) of the General Data Protection Regulation). The focus here is on protecting the informational self-determination of natural persons, i.e., individuals. This is flanked by information security, which aims to protect any data in the company that requires protection. 

In this respect, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) also defines various protection goals in relation to personal data. These can mainly be traced back to the classic protection goals of information security. Above all, confidentiality, integrity and availability of personal data are essential protection objectives of the GDPR (cf. Art. 32 (1) (b) GDPR). These must be demonstrably ensured (Art. 5 (2); 24 (1) p. 1 GDPR). Furthermore, the measures taken - like all technical and organizational measures geared towards data protection - must be regularly reviewed and further developed (Art. 24 (1) p. 2 DSGVO).
